They replace fragmented paper records with a trusted digital source that travels with the product from factory to demolition.

In the European Union, DPPs have been embedded into new regulatory frameworks:

 

Construction Products Regulation (CPR)

• The revised EU CPR (in force since January 2025) explicitly includes digital product passports for construction products as part of conformity and marketing requirements. DPPs must be linked to a unique product identifier, be open, machine-readable, and remain available for at least 10 years after the product has been placed on the market.

Ecodesign for Sustainable Products Regulation (ESPR)

• The ESPR aims to extend DPP requirements across many product categories, including construction materials, to support circular economy goals such as reuse, repair and recycling.
